ANSWERS

1. Rickey Henderson. He has hit 76 leadoff home runs entering the 2002 season.

2. Rollie Fingers. He was a teammate of Jim Perry on the 1975 Oakland A’s, and then with Gaylord Perry on the San Diego Padres in 1978 and 1979. Fingers won the World Series MVP Award in 1974, the MVP and Cy Young Awards in 1981, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1992.

3. Mike Jorgensen. A Met from 1968 to 1971 and again from 1980 to 1983, Jorgy won a Gold Glove at 1st base for the Expos in 1973.

4. Don Mincher, a Senator in 1960 and in 1971. Mincher and Mike Hegan represented the Pilots at the 1969 All-Star Game, which was held, ironically enough, in Washington.

5. Gary Sheffield. Born November 16, 1968, in Tampa, Florida, Sheffield was the starting 3rd baseman for the National League as a member of the Florida Marlins in the 1993 All-Star Game.

6. Howard Johnson. He hit 36 home runs and stole 32 bases for the Mets in 1987.

7. Robin Yount. He retired from the Milwaukee Brewers in 1978 in order to join the PGA circuit. He returned in June when replacemenent shortstop Paul Molitor seemed to have won his job.

8. Herb Washington. He had only four statistics on his 1975 Topps card (#407): games played, runs, stolen bases, and caught stealing.

9. Mike Boddicker. He was 20-11 in 1984.

10. Eddie Murray. He hit 19 grand slams, second only to Lou Gehrig. During his 21 year career, he was a teammate of 17 Rookies of the Year: Bumbry, Ripken, Lynn, Olson, Valenzuela, Griffin Strawberry, Karros, Coleman, Gooden, Alomar, Salmon, Hollandsworth, Mondesi, Nomo, Piazza, and Worrell.

12. Al Kaline wore number 6 for the Tigers and Dick McAuliffe wore number 3. Add the two of them to get 9. The batting practice pitcher, elected to the NHL Hall of Fame in 1972, was Gordie Howe.

13. Don Kessinger, the player-manager of the 1979 Chicago White Sox. His pitching rotation consisted of Ken Kravec, Rich Wortham, Ross Baumgarten, and Steve Trout, all southpaws, with Francisco Barrios representing the lone righty. His White Sox forfeited the game played on July 12, 1979, Disco Demolition Night, to the Detroit Tigers. On August 1, 1979, with a record of 46-60, Kessinger retired as a player when he resigned as the manager.

14. Tony Conigliaro. Born on January 7, 1945, Tony C hit his first grand slam on June 3, 1964, at the age of 19 years, 148 days. Tony and Billy Conigliaro, both from Revere, Massachusetts, won respective All-Star Rookie awards for the Red Sox in 1964 and 1970.

15. Andre Dawson. A native of Miami, he retired from the Florida Marlins in 1996 with 2,774 hits. He narrowly edges Vada Pinson, who had 2,757 hits lifetime. This question had appeared in an earlier trivia quiz which was written before Dawson was eligible for the Hall of Fame.

16. Bobby Wallace. In 25 seasons with the Cleveland Spiders, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the St. Louis Browns, 1894 to 1918, he never played in the World Series.

17. Vida Blue, the winner of the AL MVP in 1971.

18. Mickey Lolich, the World Series MVP in 1968.

19. Art Howe. As a tribute to Connie Mack, he wore street clothes while managing an Oakland A’s ‘turn back the clock’ game in

2000. He joined the Astros as a player in 1976, long after Mack and Burt Shotton died.

20. Joe DiMaggio. He was selected to every All-Star Game from 1936 to 1942 and from 1946 to 1951.

21. The clue narrows it down to ten choices. The 2001 Seattle Mariners represent the correct one.

22. Ted Williams. He hit 13 home runs in 91 at-bats after coming home from Korea late in the 1953 season.

23. Phil Niekro. He and Joe tied for the league lead with 21 wins in 1979. That same year, Phil also led the league with 20 losses.

24. These are the saddest of possible words: McKay to Kusick to Griffin. At least they were on September 21, 1979, to New York Yankees 2nd baseman Damaso Garcia. He was the last opposing player to hit into a Blue Jays triple play. Those who remember an outburst in 1986 understand why I call him ‘firebrand.’

25. Al Kaline. Rocky’s first pitching appearance took place in 1958 for the Indians against the Tigers. He faced the Tigers again in 1968 as a member of the New York Yankees. Colavito and Kaline were teammates from 1960 to 1963.
