JUSTIN VERLANDER ACKNOWLEDGES TORONTO CROWD
AT ROGERS CENTRE AFTER HIS THIRD NO-HITTER

9-01-2019 – TORONTO – The first no-hitter of 2019 for the HOUSTON ASTROS on 3 August, which included two recently arrived former Blue Jays, was a combined effort.

Today’s feat was started and finished only by 36-year-old future Baseball Hall of Fame RHP JUSTIN VERLANDER who tossed the third no-hitter of his distinguished career in a 2-0 win over the TORONTO BLUE JAYS at ROGERS CENTRE in Toronto.

While with the DETROIT TIGERS, he had no-hit the MILWAUKEE BREWERS on 12 June 2007, and later the Blue Jays on 7 May 2011, coming just a walk shy of throwing a perfect game, in the eighth inning by C J.P. ARENCIBIA.

In this game, he threw 120 pitches, a season high, fanning 14, allowing only one baserunner, a five-pitch one-out walk to CAVAN BIGGIO in the second at-bat in the first inning, once again keeping him from a perfect game.

He also exceeded the 250-strikeout plateau for the 2019 season which marked the fifth time in his career he has done so, becoming only the fifth pitcher in MLB history to reach that mark at least five times in his career, joining ROGER CLEMENS, RANDY JOHNSON, NOLAN RYAN and MAX SCHERZER.

His 14 strikeouts were three shy of the all-time record of 17 in a no-hitter, set by Ryan on 15 July 1973, for the CALIFORNIA ANGELS against the DETROIT TIGERS and tied by Scherzer on the penultimate day of the 2015 regular season for his WASHINGTON NATIONALS at the NEW YORK METS.

He started this outing off with a 93.6 mph fastball to BO BICHETTE, then later ended the game with one at 96.9 mph, also to Bichette, and his five fastest pitches of the outing, two at 97.2 mph, one at 96.9 mph, and two at 96.3 mph, all came in that final plate appearance in the ninth against Bichette.

With roughly five starts remaining this season, Verlander’s shot at exceeding the 300 mark for a season for the first time in his career remains in reach. Only 17 pitchers in the Modern Era have struck out that many in a season.

Back when the right-hander no-hit the Blue Jays the first time he was a radically different pitcher. In that game the then 28-year-old was averaging 97.3 mph and topping out at 102. His game plan was to fill the top of the zone with fastballs then throw his changeup to the glove side and his slider to the arm side Almost gone entirely is the changeup in favour of a greater emphasis on breaking balls. Verlander still favours the top of the zone with his fastballs, but now looks to climb the ladder even higher, hoping to catch hitters waving well out of the zone. The end result was far more whiffs. In Verlander’s no-hitter, he only elicited one swinging strike on his extremely powerful fastball and ended the game with just four strikeouts. On Sunday, his heater, which now averages a significantly slower 94.5 mph, got the Blue Jays to swing and miss 14 times.

By no-hitting Toronto on Sunday, the premier right-hander became the first pitcher in Major League Baseball history to no-hit the same team on the road twice -- both at Rogers Centre. Verlander now joins Ryan, SANDY KOUFAX, BOB FELLER, LARRY CORCORAN and CY YOUNG to throw three or more no-hitters in their careers.

The only Astros runs of the game came on a two-out, two run home run in the top of the 9th from Canadian-born outfielder ABRAHAM TORO in only his 8th big league game since recently being called up from their Triple-AAA affiliate, the ROUND ROCK EXPRESS, by Houston.

Toronto, oddly enough, has historically been Verlander’s biggest challenge as even with the no-hitter eight years ago, Verlander’s 4.73 ERA against the Blue Jays entering Sunday was his worst mark against any team in the Majors.

Houston has two of the four no-hitters thrown this season. On 3 August, at MINUTE MAID PARK, AARON SANCHEZ ( six innings ), WILL HARRIS ( one ), JOE BIAGINI ( one ) and CHRIS DEVENSKI ( one ) capped off the second combined no-no in franchise history.

This was the fourth no-hitter thrown at Rogers Centre, the second by Verlander, while DAVE STEWART with the OAKLAND ATHLETICS and Canadian-born JAMES PAXTON while with the SEATTLE MARINERS threw the others.
