Who Will be the next Canadian to Don a Major League Uniform?

St. Marys – The next Canadian to don a major league uniform will be the 200th of all-time! Stubby Clapp (Windsor, Ontario) became number 99 when he was called up to the show by the St. Louis Cardinals last season.

Front-runners to become number 200 include Toronto, Ontario's Alex Andreopoulos (C, Expos), Navan, Ontario's Erik Bedard (LHP, Orioles), Scarborough, Ontario's Todd Betts (1B, Red Sox), Vancouver, BC's Cody McKay (C, Athletics – son of Dave McKay, Canadian Baseball Hall-of-Famer and current coach with the Cardinals), New Westminster, BC's Justin Morneau (1B, Twins), Tillsonburg, Ontario's Mike Meyers (RHP, Cubs), and Waterloo, Ontario's Chad Ricketts (RHP, Blue Jays).

The first Canadian ever to play in the major leagues was Guelph, Ontario native Mike Brannock, who played for Chicago in the National Association in 1871. Number 50 was Harley "Lady" Payne (Windsor, ON), who played for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1896. Number 100 was Oscar "Lefty" Judd (London, ON), who played for the Boston Red Sox in 1941. Number 150 was Ken Crosby (New Denver, BC), who played for the Chicago Cubs in 1975.

In all, 11 Canadians were named on 2002 Opening Day rosters, including Rheal Cormier (Phillies), Ryan Dempster (Marlins), Eric Gagne (Dodgers), Steve Green (Angels), Danny Klassen (Diamondbacks), Corey Koskie (Twins), Paul Quantrill (Dodgers), Chris Reitsma (Reds), Matt Stairs (Brewers), Larry Walker (Rockies), and Jeff Zimmerman (Rangers).
