TEAM USA GOES DEEP VERSUS TEAM CANADA AT CANADIAN BALL HALL

St. Marys – When rising star STACY WHEAL sang the anthems, she didn't realize that the Team USA players would take the phrase "bombs bursting in air" so seriously. On the St. Marys Cement Plant Field at the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum, the Americans homered eight times in doubling Team Canada 18-9 in front of a crowd of 600 partisan fans. The game was closer than the score indicated, as Canada trailed 8-5 in the bottom of the seventh with nobody out and the bases loaded. However, Port Coquitlam's RUSSELL SMITHSON lined to shortstop JUSTIN TORDI, a BLUE JAYS draft pick, and he flipped it to second base in time to double up Mississauga native CHRIS LEROUX. Team USA then piled on ten runs over the last two innings against an overworked Canadian pitching staff.

Willowdale's ERIC WOLFE led the Canadian offensive attack with a pair of doubles and a single. London's JAMIE ROMAK and Delta's TYLER WILLIAMS added two hits apiece. Romak and Surrey's ADAM LOEWEN, chosen fourth overall in the draft, homered for Team Canada.

Both national teams now travel to Thunder Bay, Ottawa, and Montreal, respectively, en route to the World Junior Championships scheduled for Sherbrooke, Quebec beginning August 1st.
