St. Marys - The Celebrity Golf Classic has been sold out for weeks, the closest hotel space is Stratford or London, expanded parking is planned, and anyone who wants a seat in the tent for the 2003 Induction Ceremony had better arrive before 8:30 AM on Saturday, June 28, when The Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame will enshrine Joe Carter, Kirk McCaskill, Richard Belec and the Vancouver Asahi.
Induction Weekend 2003 (June 27-28) is being co-sponsored by the Toronto Blue Jays, the Montreal Expos, Re/Max, and the St. Marys Cement Plant.
As if those names aren't big enough, other confirmed celebrities who will descend into St. Marys for all or part of the weekend include Rod Black, who will MC the Induction Ceremony, Michael Burgess, who will sing the national anthem, and Yuk Yuk's On Tour, who will perform at a fundraising event on the evening of the 28th in the same tent on the Hall of Fame's Ceremonial Grounds.
Add to that same list Paul Beeston, Paul Godfrey, Omar Minaya, Peter Mansbridge, Lorenza Sammarelli (Miss Canada International 2003), Michael Burgess, Jayna Hefford (scored the gold medal winning goal vs. USA in 2000 Olympics), Fergie Jenkins, Sean McCann, Steve Rogers, Ron Piche, Jim Fanning, Reno Bertoia, Tommy Burgess, Mark Bell, Harvey Schiller, and still more, and St. Marys becomes a Who's Who for its 48-hour-star-studded weekend.
While the Celebrity Golf Classic is sold out for Friday, June 27, tickets are still available for the Sports Celebrity Banquet that follows beginning at 5:00 PM. Tickets are $50 including a steak dinner and free admission to the museum, but they must be purchased no later than Tuesday, June 24 by contacting the Hall at 284-1838 or email baseball@baseballhalloffame.ca.
The Induction Ceremony will start promptly at 10:00 AM on Saturday the 28th, and will end at approximately 12:30 PM. There is no charge for admission. It is recommended that if you cannot arrive before 9:00AM, to bring your own lawnchairs and umbrellas (for sun or rain). Following the ceremony will be an autograph session, where a ten dollar donation is asked for each round of autographs.
Tickets for the Yuk Yuk's show which begins at 7:30 PM on Saturday the 28th, are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Food and refreshments will be served. On Saturday afternoon, the St. Marys Pee Wees will host a doubleheader at St. Marys Cement Plant Field, while the St. Marys Rookie Rockets will host a game on Diamond #3. Volunteers are also needed for both days. As a fan or as a volunteer, please come join in the fun and mix with the stars.
