St. Marys After a ten-year stint in the Rogers Centre, the OFSAA high school baseball Final Four will be played in St. Marys at the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame's two main diamonds, the St. Marys Cement Company Field and Rotary Field, on June 13 & 14.
The showcase event is expected to draw numerous scouts and media attention, as several high draft picks and national team members have emerged from previous Prentice Cups, named after Canadian Baseball Hall-of-Famer Bobby Prentice, such as Durham Pickering's Lee Delfino, Brampton's Darren Watts, Toronto Michael Power high school's Chris Emanuele and Toronto Birchmount's Tim Smith and Les Williams.
The participants will be determined in double-knockout tournaments slated for Oshawa and Burlington on June 6-7th.
Semi-finals will take place at 11:00am and 2:00pm on Wednesday, June 13, with a barbecue and tour of the Hall's museum for all teams and officials scheduled afterwards. The third place game is scheduled for Thursday, June 14 at 11:00am, and the Gold Medal Championship game will follow at 2:00pm. While OFSAA is bringing down most of the tournament officials, St. Marys Mayor Jamie Hahn has kindly offered and been approved as PA Announcer for the final two games. As well, St. Marys Central School will be providing the anthem singers for the Gold Medal Game.
The defending champion is Mississauga Loyola Catholic Secondary School. Previous champions include 2005 winner Mississauga Lorne Park Secondary School, 2004 victors Toronto Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute, and 2003 champs Durham Pickering High School.
“This is a huge coup for St. Marys and I really hope that the community will come out and watch this high calibre of baseball - it is an event that we'd like to see return to St. Marys again and again,” said Ball Hall president Tom Valcke.
“Obviously, we know that work and school will hamper the turnout of fans, but we had no input regarding the game times - they were dictated to us by OFSAA.”
