St. Marys A total of ten area ballplayers, including St. Marys' Jared Zufelt, Jaxon Valcke, Trent Dundas, Hayden Moore and Sam Thorup, emerged victorious in the local Pepsi Pitch, Hit & Run competition held on Rotary Field at the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame over the long weekend.
Joined by Stratford's Anthony Stott, Nick Carter, Nolan Grasby, Lakeside's Garrick Byers and Thorndale's Garan Stevens, the next step in the journey to the Rogers Centre and possibly even the Major League All-Star Game in San Francisco is the Sectional Competition at 2:00pm on June 3rd that will be hosted by the Ball Hall again, this time on the St. Marys Cement Company Field.
Stott swept the 13-14 year old's category by hitting the pitching target with five of six throws, belting a fly ball 286 feet, and running from second base to home (160 feet) in 7.2 seconds. Mitchell McIntosh and Kyle Frey finished second and third, respectively.
Zufelt was the overall champ in the 11-12 year old's category, tying Carter for the pitching lead with five strikes apiece, and winning the hitting with a 153-foot fly ball. Byers won the running category with a time of 8.1 seconds. Carter finished second overall, with Luke Harmer placing third.
Four strikes out of six throws carried Valcke to the overall title for the 9-10 year old category. Garan won the hitting with a 114-foot fly ball, and Dundas was the fastest runner at 9.1 seconds. Drew McKenzie Caspi and Tyler Jarrett finished second and third, respectively.
Moore threw four strikes in winning the pitching and overall championship in the 7-8 year old category. Grasby was the top hitter with an 84-foot fly ball, while Thorup clocked a 9.4 second sprint to win the running and finish second overall. Chris St. Pierre of Trois Rivieres, Quebec, placed third overall.
All scores are reset to zero and each youngster participates in all three components in the Sectional Competition. From there, only the 1st place All-Around Champions of each of the age groups is given the opportunity to advance to the Team Competition at Rogers Centre.
