St. Marys The Hall of Fame's new entries in the Premier Baseball League of Ontario earned some respect yesterday in second day action of the campaign.
At St. Marys Company Field, the 16 & under squad beat the London Badgers 9-3 in the opener of a doubleheader, and were edged 5-3 in the second game, giving them a 1-3 record to begin their inaugural season.
At City Wide Park in London, the 18 & under team was shutout 5-0 in its first game, but took the Badgers into extra innings with the score tied 3-3 in the following game. However, after one extra inning, due to scheduling conflicts at City Wide Park, the teams had to abandon the field and settle with a tie. The tie leaves the club with a 0-3-1 mark. A bigger set back for the club was when hurler PJ McColl suffered a dislocated finger on his pitching hand, and looks to be out a minimum of six weeks.
Joe Mihaly threw a complete game 90-pitch outing for the 16 & unders, allowing just four hits along the way, and striking out six. The Hall of Fame took the lead in the first inning as Tyler Bradley singled home Jeff Dobos, and then scored along with Mitchell Clarke on Jeremy Schwartzentruber's double to left. In the fourth inning, Dale Guenther drove home Mihaly, who had singled and stole second. St. Marys wrapped up their scoring in the fifth inning on consecutive RBI doubles by Bradley and Schwartzentruber. In the second game, Clarke, Bradley and Joel Slack pitched and Dobos led the offense with a pair of singles. The Hall threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners on second and third with two out, but London held on for the victory.
In the first game for the under 18 team, Mark Hancock threw a complete game scattering 8 hits and striking out a pair, but the bats were quiet, as Kyle Fisher had two of the clubs four hits. In game two, Joe Belcot struck out 11 while giving up three runs and five hits over five innings. McColl kept London at bay for an inning and two thirds, but left the game after a line drive struck the back of his pitching hand. Robert Ramsdale held London scoreless the rest of the way. Offensively, Phil Cave scored in the first after walking and advancing on singles by Ramsdale and Garrett Fisher. In the fourth, Paul Bahous walked, stole second, advanced on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch. St. Marys closed out their scoring when Kris Hodges singled home Matt Bogue to briefly take the lead in the fifth.
McColl's injury emphasizes the need for two to three players on each team, particularly pitchers. Players interested should contact the Hall of Fame at the numbers below.
The 18 & unders play in a tournament this coming weekend in Toronto, while the 16 & unders are hoping to land an exhibition game on either Saturday or Sunday at St. Marys Company Field.
