Bay, who batted .309 with a team-leading 20 home runs and 59 RBIs in 91 games with the Beavers, is expected to join the Pirates on Wednesday. With the Beavers, Bay reached base by walk or hit in 34 of his last 35 games and paced the team with 64 runs scored. He was second on the club with 23 stolen bases.

Bay, 23, made his major league debut this season, appearing in three games for the Padres prior to fracturing his wrist after being hit by a pitch from Arizona starter Elmer Dessens on May 25. Bay batted .250 (2-for-8) with a home run, double and two RBIs in his three games with San Diego.

The fifth Canadian-born player to play for the Padres, Bay began the season at Portland and was named Pacific Coast League Player of the Month for April, prior to being recalled by the Friars. During the month of April, he batted .376 with nine home runs and a league-leading 31 RBIs for the Beavers.

Bay was acquired from the New York Mets along with left-handed pitcher Bobby M. Jones and right-handed pitcher Josh Reynolds in exchange for right-handed pitcher Steve Reed and Jason Middlebrook on July 31, 2002. He began his professional career with the Montreal Expos, who drafted him in the 22nd round of the 2000 First-Year Player Draft.

Perez, 22, spent a month with the Beavers this year, posting a 3-3 record and a 3.02 ERA in eight starts. He struck out 48 batters in 47.2 innings pitched. With the Padres, Perez was 4-7 with a 5.38 ERA in 19 starts.
