CBL Brings Microsoft Top Gun
in as League President Riviera appoints
Charlton Lui President & CEO
of the Canadian Baseball League

August 29, 2002 – Vancouver, B.C. – The Canadian Baseball League, Canada’s first and only professional baseball league, is pleased to announce the appointment of Charlton Lui as President and CEO. Lui, who co-founded the CBL with league Chairman Tony Riviera, is bringing his leadership and project management skills directly from Microsoft’s Tablet PC initiative to Canada’s new professional baseball league.

“We’re pleased to have Charlton on board, he is an outstanding leader with exceptional organizational skills” said CBL Chairman and Founder Tony Riviera. “Charlton specializes is managing large scale projects, he brings proven abilities and world class talent to the table. He is a key addition to our management team. We’re fortunate to have him, and I am looking forward to working closely with him as we launch Canada’s first professional baseball league” continued Mr. Riviera.

Mr. Lui brings two decades of successful business experience to the CBL, building his career at companies such as Apple Computer, IBM/Metaphor, Nomadic Systems and Microsoft. Mr. Lui spent his recent tenure at Microsoft heading up product development for the new Tablet PC. Mr. Lui co-founded theTablet PC providing the vision and driving product development while working closely with Bill Gates and top industry leaders. The Tablet PC is slated to launch in the fall of 2002 with devices built by OEMs such as Toshiba, Compaq, NEC, Fujitsu and Acer.

“I am excited to be a part of the CBL” said Mr. Lui. “This is a remarkable opportunity. The current structure of professional baseball in North America does not favor Canadian-based teams, nor does it place a high priority on the needs and desires of the Canadian fan. The CBL exists to serve the Canadian sports fan. The opportunity to work with people like Tony Riviera, Ferguson Jenkins and John Haar to make this league a reality is unique and exciting, and I am looking forward to meeting the challenges ahead” continued Mr. Lui.

Riviera, as chairman and chief strategist, oversees baseball operations working closely with the CBL’s director of baseball operations, John Haar. Haar, former head coach of the National Baseball Institute of Canada and the Canadian National Team, is responsible for player development, coaching and officiating positions, and on-field operations. Charlton Lui supervises the league’s day-to-day business operations, finances and overall project management. League Commissioner Ferguson Jenkins, the only Canadian elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, is responsible for positioning and maintaining the CBL’s vision of establishing itself as Canada's premier professional baseball venue.

The Canadian Baseball League will begin play across Canada beginning in the spring of 2003. The CBL will showcase high caliber professional baseball similar to leagues operating in Japan, Mexico, Korea and Taiwan. Each team will carry a mandatory number of Canadian players (similar to the Canadian Football League) and will draw its remaining players primarily from the USA, Asia and Latin America. The league is holding its first open tryouts in September 2002, with evaluations scheduled for London, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary. More information on tryout venues, times and other locations will be posted in the coming weeks on the official CBL website.
